How to choose your PEMF machine

Five things that matter when you're spending real money on PEMF therapy.

Coil or mat — and when each is right

PEMF energy reaches the body through one of two delivery types: coils or mats. They do different jobs.

Coils are circular pads you place directly over a specific area — a knee, shoulder, lower back, or pet's hip. They focus the magnetic field into a small zone, which means deeper penetration on the target. If you're treating a specific injury, joint problem, or recovery zone, you want a coil.

Mats are flat, full-body pads you lie on. They spread the field across a large surface, but at lower intensity per square inch than a coil. Mats are good for general wellness, relaxation, and whole-body sessions where you're not focused on one area.

Plenty of serious PEMF users want both. That's why the BodyCharger exists: dual coils plus a 70″ × 28″ full-body mat in one system.

Single-coil or dual-coil

This is a productivity decision, not a quality decision.

A single-coil machine treats one area at a time at full intensity. That's enough for most home users and many practitioners. The Sentient Element Solo is single-coil and runs at the same peak intensity as the Duo.

A dual-coil machine treats two areas at once — both knees, both shoulders, both sides of the lower back, or two clients in two rooms at the same time. It doesn't make sessions stronger. It makes them faster. For a busy practice running 6–8 sessions a day, the Duo cuts session time roughly in half. For a home user running one session a day, the second coil sits idle.

If your honest answer to "will I actually use a second coil?" is no, save the $1,000 and choose Solo. If you're running a practice or treating two areas regularly, the Duo pays for itself within months.

Frequency range

PEMF machines work by pulsing the magnetic field at varying frequencies, measured in Hertz (Hz). Different protocols use different frequency ranges, and a wider range gives you the flexibility to run more session types on the same machine.

Sentient Light machines run from 2 Hz on the Mini Element Solo (and 7 Hz on the Element series) up to 10,000 Hz. That's a broad therapeutic range.

A lot of cheaper PEMF devices are locked to a narrow band — sometimes a single fixed frequency. They can run one type of session and that's it. If you want flexibility to follow research protocols, switch between modes, or adapt sessions over time, frequency range matters.

Home use or clinical use

The same machine isn't always ideal for both, even when the specs look similar on paper.

Home use is about portability, easy setup, and a comfortable session length. A home user runs maybe 30–60 minutes a day, treats themselves and family, and wants the machine simple enough to move between rooms. The Mini Element Solo is built around that.

Clinical use is about duty cycle, throughput, and long-term durability. A practice might run several hours a day across multiple client sessions. The amplifier, coils, and electronics need to handle that load without overheating or wearing out. The Sentient Element Solo, Duo, and BodyCharger are engineered for that — 2,500W amplifiers and 5-year warranties on core systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. PEMF therapy has been studied for over five decades, and the FDA approved PEMF for non-union bone fractures back in 1979. Since then, peer-reviewed research has examined PEMF for osteoarthritis, soft tissue healing, post-surgical recovery, circulation, and pain.

The Sentient Element specifically was used in a 12-week peer-reviewed clinical study on knee osteoarthritis, published on ResearchGate and indexed in Google Scholar and Scopus. Read the study →

Sentient Element delivers significantly higher peak intensity than most PEMF machines available today — up to 150,000 Gauss compared to fractions of a Gauss on devices like BEMER and iMRS, or 3,990 Gauss on machines like MagnaWave Sol. We also offer a wider frequency range (2–10,000 Hz) and a 2,500W max amplifier, which is higher than most competitors.

For a side-by-side comparison of Sentient Element against AmpCoil, PEMF 120, QRS 101, iMRS 2000, PEMF8000, BEMER, and MagnaWave on price, intensity, frequency, and waveform, see our PEMF device comparison chart →

The magnetic field a PEMF coil produces depends on its size. Think of speakers: you wouldn't try to fill a room with sound using earbuds — they're too small to produce the field needed. The same holds for magnetic fields. If you want the field to penetrate deep into your body where it's needed, the coil has to be large enough to create that field. The Sentient Element's 12″ coil is sized to deliver a field strong enough to reach deep tissue at full intensity.

Yes — at high intensity for extended periods, especially when running frequencies below 100 Hz. This is true for any high-powered PEMF machine.

Think of it like driving a car with a 500-horsepower engine. The power is there when you need it, but you don't drive at 100 mph for 8 hours straight without overheating something. PEMF works the same way — there's always a trade-off between intensity and session length. Higher intensities mean shorter sessions, and that's how you're meant to use the machine.

Yes. The same coil-based machines work on pets — many practitioners and pet owners use Sentient Light machines on dogs and horses for joint issues, recovery, and wellness. If your pet is the primary use case rather than an occasional one, we also make dedicated PEMF pet mats → designed for sustained pet use.

We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on machines — if it doesn't work for you, return it within 30 days for a refund. Shipping in the continental US is included on machines, and we ship internationally on a case-by-case basis. All Sentient Light machines come with a warranty of up to 5 years on core systems.
