The differences between the 2 groups hugely favored the active treatment group. 6% of the participants given active treatment noticed slight improvement, 24% had clear improvement, and 70% people experienced substantial relief of their sleep issues. On the other hand, placebo group results were – 49% noticed no improvement, 49% saw slight improvement, and one participant had very clear relief.

The PEMF therapy for insomnia helped 90% of the people while the placebo group insomnia treatment showed only 50% improvement. Therefore, most sleep problems can be dealt with the use of PEMF therapies.

The AMF used in the study was set at 35 mT with a sinusoidal frequency of 50 Hz. Sessions were conducted daily for 15 days, with 30–45 minutes of exposure applied over bandages. Following the session period, patients reported improvements in overall well-being, including better appetite and improved sleep. Reductions in general weakness and discomfort were also observed.

Because alternating magnetic fields are a form of pulsed electromagnetic field technology, findings such as these have led researchers to explore whether PEMF wellness sessions may help support relaxation and improved sleep experiences for people recovering from trauma.

Another study investigated lower-intensity Transcranial Magnetotherapy (TMT) in 32 patients with alcoholism. Participants also received complementary approaches, while a control group underwent a placebo procedure. TMT was administered in 10 daily sessions lasting 10–20 minutes. Participants in the TMT group showed improvements in physical activity, mood, and overall well-being, along with reduced alcohol cravings.

Research has also examined the relationship between sleep patterns and mood. Changes in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep are known to be associated with depression. Studies involving high-intensity repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) found that it delayed the first REM sleep cycle by about 17 minutes on average and increased total sleep duration.

These REM sleep changes resemble patterns observed with certain depression interventions. Researchers suggest that rTMS may influence circadian and ultradian biological rhythms, which may help explain its positive effects on mood. Similar responses may also be explored with other high-intensity PEMF approaches.
